cash crop

/ˌkæʃ ˈkrɑp/
IPA guide

Other forms: cash crops

Anything that's grown and sold to make a profit is known as a cash crop. You might grow tomatoes and strawberries as a cash crop, selling them at the local farmer's market.

Unlike something you grow for yourself, like your raised bed of zucchini and carrots that you pick and eat all summer long, a cash crop is planted and harvested with one goal in mind: making a profit. Farmers make their living with cash crops; anything they and their families consume (or they feed to their animals) is known as a subsistence crop. The price growers get for their cash crops depends on demand and shipping distance, among other variables. Common cash crops include corn, wheat, and coffee beans.
